About Mounjaro
What is Mounjaro?
- Mounjaro contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide
- It is a revolutionary weight-loss injection that offers a clinically proven approach to managing obesity.
- It was developed by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.
- It is a single use, once-weekly injectable treatment designed to regulate appetite and metabolism, providing a targeted solution for sustainable weight loss.
- Mounjaro is indicated for chronic weight management as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults with an initial BMI ≥30 kg/m2 (obesity) or ≥27 kg/m2 (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
- Mounjaro is a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonist and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is a first in a new class of treatments for weight loss and works by suppressing appetite, making you feel less hungry, resulting in weight loss.
Mounjaro, initially recognised for its role in managing type 2 diabetes, has now been authorised by the MHRA for weight management in adults, and will be available in the UK before the end of the month.
Manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly This revolutionary weight-loss treatment contains the active ingredient Tirzepatide, which is transforming the landscape of obesity management and offering new hope to individuals striving to achieve their health goals. With its innovative mechanism of action, Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) has emerged as a game-changer in the fight against obesity, providing a clinically proven solution for weight reduction.
Developed with cutting-edge medical research, Mounjaro targets the underlying biological processes that regulate appetite, food intake, and insulin sensitivity. By mimicking the action of key hormones involved in glucose regulation and appetite control, Tirzepatide helps reduce hunger and improve metabolic health, leading to significant weight loss. This dual-action approach not only aids in shedding pounds but also contributes to the overall improvement of metabolic markers, making it a powerful ally against obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
For individuals in the UK seeking a reliable and effective solution for weight loss, Mounjaro represents a beacon of hope. The convenience of being able to buy Mounjaro online has made it more accessible to those in need, offering a straightforward path towards achieving weight loss objectives without compromising on safety or support. With its proven efficacy, ease of use, and the growing availability through online platforms, Mounjaro is setting new standards in weight loss treatment, providing a lifeline for many on their journey to better health.
What is Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)
Tirzepatide is a medication developed by Eli Lilly and is the active ingredient found in Mounjaro. Clinical trials have shown that Tirzepatide can lead to significant weight loss.
Mounjaro, initially recognised for its role in managing type 2 diabetes, has now been authorised by the MHRA for weight management in adults, and will be available in the UK before the end of the month.
If you are familiar with Ozempic and Wegovy, then it works similarly to these products in that it makes you feel fuller for longer, curbs cravings and allows you to reduce your calorie intake, which, when used with other lifestyle changes, may lead to weight loss.
The weight loss effect of Tirzepatide is believed to be due to its dual mechanism of action, which involves both glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) receptor agonism. These mechanisms work to increase insulin secretion, decrease glucagon secretion, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite, ultimately leading to weight loss.
In phase 3 clinical trials, Tirzepatide demonstrated substantial weight loss in participants with obesity and type 2 diabetes. For example, in the SURPASS clinical trial program, participants receiving Tirzepatide experienced weight loss ranging from around 11% to 17% of their body weight over a period of 52 weeks. This weight loss was significantly greater than what was observed in participants receiving placebo or other comparators.
It’s important to note that individual responses to Tirzepatide may vary, and not everyone will experience the same degree of weight loss.
Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
When deciding between Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight loss, there are various factors to consider that may prompt a change in your weight loss approach.
Weight-loss treatments have varying effects on individuals, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. If you are suffering from side effects and are not experiencing any weight loss even at the highest prescribed dose of semaglutide (Wegovy) , switching to Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) might be worth considering.
If you have experienced adverse effects from Wegovy, transitioning to Mounjaro could be an alternative. Although both medications share common side effects, their compositions differ in that Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is solely a GLP-1 receptor agonist; Mounjaro, produced by Eli Lilly, is both a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist and the first of its kind in obesity and weight management.
It is crucial to remember that both drugs should be used alongside a low-calorie diet and regular exercise for optimal results.
Clinical trials suggest both medications are safe and effective for weight management, but they found that Mounjaro appears to be more effective than Wegovy when it comes to the total amount of weight lost.
Doses
Another factor when considering switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro are the doses. Wegovy has 5 different strengths, while Mounjaro has 6. They are both once-weekly injections, and you should follow the dosing schedule until you find the dose most suited to you.
With Mounjaro, you must start on the lowest dose at 2.5mg and it is important to remember that if a lower dose is effective, there will be no need to increase. If you have already been taking Wegovy and wants to swap to Mounjaro, depending on the dose of Wegovy you may be able to start Monujaro on a higher dose but this will be discussed following your approved consultation form.
Switching treatments
Do not stop or start any medication without speaking to us first, due to the different doses and scheduling, you will need to have stopped taking Wegovy before you start taking Mounjaro but advice will be given to you following your consultation.
Starting Mounjaro
Once you have decided to make the switch, you may need to start Mounjaro on the lowest dose before following the dosing schedule and increasing. It may feel like a set back starting from the beginning but it is important for us to manage your weight loss journey safely. If you increase the dose too quickly, it could lead to adverse side effects, so it is important that you follow the schedule until we find the dose suited to you.
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are safe and effective weight loss medications that help to reduce appetite, curb cravings, and, when used alongside diet and lifestyle factors, help you to lose weight.
Mounjaro
Wegovy
- Wegovy contains the active ingredient Semaglutide.
- It is a revolutionary weight-loss injection that offers a clinically proven approach to managing obesity.
- It was developed by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk.
- It is a once-weekly injectable treatment designed to regulate appetite and metabolism, providing a targeted solution for sustainable weight loss.
- Until recently, healthcare professionals would prescribe semaglutide under the brand name Ozempic (which is licensed to treat type 2 diabetes) ‘off-label’ to treat obesity.
- However, Semaglutide now has an additional product license under the brand name Wegovy, which is specifically licensed for the management of overweight and obesity, so off-label use of ozempic is no longer required.
- Wegovy is indicated for chronic weight management as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in adults with an initial BMI ≥30 kg/m2 (obesity) or ≥27 kg/m2 (overweight) in the presence of at least one weight-related comorbid condition.
How long does it take to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
Currently, we do not have specific details regarding the waiting period required between stopping Wegovy and starting Mounjaro.
Wegovy has an extended half-life, which means it may take several weeks for it to completely leave your system, depending on the dosage.
Once we have determined the appropriate timeframe for transitioning from Wegovy to Mounjaro, we will provide you with that information.
Will I get withdrawal symptoms when switching between Wegovy and Mounjaro?
You might experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking Wegovy, which may result in weight re-gain, changes to your mood and some Gastrointestinal symptoms
You may want to think about gradually reducing your dose of Wegovy to prevent the effects from occurring before completely stopping medication.
It is important to remember to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle with a reduced-calorie diet along with increased physical activity.
How does Mounjaro work?
Similar to Ozempic and Wegovy, Mounjaro works by mimicking the naturally occurring hormone called glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which is released in the gut in response to food intake and acts as a physiological regulator of appetite.
GLP-1 targets areas of the brain involved in the regulation of appetite and food intake. This can help you eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
Unlike other weight loss medications, Mounjaro is also a Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide receptor agonist (GIP) which works on another hormone in the body used to help regulate your appetite.
Like all medications, Mounjaro can give some people side effects when they first start to take it. However, not everyone will experience side effects, and those who do often find that they go away on their own within a few weeks or months as their body gets used to the medication.
What are the potential side effects of Mounjaro? Most side effects that are reported with this treatment tend to involve the gut, and include;
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Stomach Pain
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Burping
Other common side effects listed include;
- Indigestion
- Inflamed Stomach (gastritis)
- Acid reflux or heartburn
- Gallstones
- Dizziness
- Constipation
- Tiredness
The complete list of side effects is available here.
If you do experience side effects whilst taking Semaglutide, we can provide any supporting treatments which might help you to deal with them.
As it’s a prescription-only medicine, Mounjaro has to be prescribed by a medical professional who will be able to assess whether or it is a safe treatment for you.

People respond to medicines differently, and individual results may vary, but many people start noticing weight loss within the first few weeks of starting Mounjaro.
It is important to remember that weight loss is a gradual process, and consistency is key.
Starting Mounjaro
There are six different doses available, ranging from the starting dose of 2.5mg to the maximum dose of 15mg.
You must always start at the lowest dose of 2.5mg which you will inject once a week for a month (4 weeks) this will allow your body to adjust to the medication and help reduce the risk of potential side effects.
After this dose, if necessary, you might move on to the next dose which is 5mg, and gradually increase your dose by 2.5mg every 4 weeks. The maximum dose is 15mg. It is important to remember NOT to titrate to the next dose if the current dose you are taking is managing your hunger and cravings. Gradually increasing your dose (titration) helps your body adjust to the medication and reduces the risk of potential side effects.

Can I start on the Highest dose of Mounjaro?
The simple answer is no; you cannot start with the highest dose of Mounjaro.
You must start at the lowest starting dose of 2.5mg and gradually increase (titrate) through doses until you find the right dose that works for you.
You need to allow your body to adjust to the medication, and by starting at the lowest dose, you allow your body to experience the effects of reduced hunger, feeling fuller for longer, and any potential side effects should you have them.
If, after the first 4 weeks on the dose of 2.5mg, you feel that you are still hungry and are craving foods, then your dose will be discussed and you will may titrate to the next. You will go through the same process to ensure that your body is steadily adjusting to the new dose without causing any potential side effects.
Some people may think that starting at the highest dose will increase their chances of losing weight, but this is not the case. You are more likely to experience serious unwanted side effects as you have not allowed your body to get used to the medication.
To make any changes to your medication or dose, please speak to our team of experts.

Taking Mounjaro
How long will I have to use Mounjaro for?
- Mounjaro is considered safe for long-term use.
- The benefits of sustained treatment often outweigh the risks, particularly when overseen by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Clinical trials also revealed a reduced risk of adverse cardiovascular events, including heart attacks or strokes.
- The Virtual Slimming Clinic will conduct a thorough assessment to ensure that long-term use is appropriate for your specific medical condition.
- It is crucial to remain vigilant for any side effects and report them to us.
- This allows for timely adjustments to your treatment plan, ensuring that you continue to benefit from the medication.
What will happen if I stop taking Mounjaro?
- Obesity is considered to be a long-term chronic health condition, just like diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. If you were taking medicines to help manage those diseases and you stopped them, you would expect your blood sugar, blood pressure or cholesterol to go back up too. Obesity is the same type of chronic disease and the leading cause of those other diseases, so we fully expect that if you stop the medication, over time you will gradually start to regain weight because your appetite will return.
- As weight-loss specialists, The Virtual Slimming Clinic understand that our plan for patients is chronic use of these medications. It is often the case that “maintenance” of weight loss can be achieved where people don’t need to take the medication every week, they may take it less frequently, for example several times a month, but chronic use is what we anticipate in order to keep the weight off.
- Combining changes in lifestyle will also help patients remain at a healthy weight.
Can I use Mounjaro with other weight loss treatments?
Mounjaro should NOT be taken with other weight-loss drugs, such as Saxenda or Wegovy. This will increase the risk of unwanted side effects.
Can I travel with Mounjaro? It is possible to travel with your Mounjaro pen.
- When travelling by air, keep your Mounjaro pen with you or in your carry-on bags, as it may freeze in the baggage compartment.
- Your pen should be kept in its original box
- If needed, Mounjaro may be stored at room temperature (but below 30 degrees) for up to 30 consecutive days.
How should I store my Mounjaro pen?
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN OR VUNERABLE ADULTS
Storing your Mounjaro correctly will ensure it remains effective and safe so that you can get the most from your medication.
How should I store my Mounjaro pen? Follow these guidelines to store Mounjaro properly:
- Keep Mounjaro in its original packaging, in order to protect it from light, moisture, and other external factors.
- Store Mounjaro in the refrigerator between 36°F (2°C) and 46°F (8°C) – However, Mounjaro can be stored at room temperature (but below 30 degrees) for 6 weeks whilst in use, without having any effect on the efficacy of the drug (see side of box to clarify).
- Avoid freezing Mounjaro, as extreme temperatures can render it ineffective.
- Protect from light, as Tirzepatide is sensitive to light exposure, so it’s essential to keep Mounjaro in its packaging and store it away from direct sunlight or brightly lit areas.
- Do not leave the needle attached after each injection, as this could be dangerous and poses a risk of infection.
Each Mounjaro pen will last until its expiration date, but once used for the first time, it will last 6 weeks. Always check the medication through the glass window on the pen before use, to make sure it’s not cloudy or coloured.
How long does a Mounjaro pen last?
Each Mounjaro pen contains enough medication for four doses, and as Mounjaro is injected once weekly, one pen will last 4 weeks
What should I do if I have missed a dose of Mounjaro?
It is important that you take your Mounjaro each week, in order to maintain a consistent level of medication in your system.
- If you miss a dose of Mounjaro, inject the next dose as soon possbile as long as it is within 4 days (96) hours after the missed dose.
- If you miss a dose of Mounjaro and the next scheduled dose is less than 2 days away (48 hours), do not administer the dose. Take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day.
- If you miss doses of Mounjaro for more than 2 weeks, take your next dose on the regularly scheduled day or call your health care provider to talk about how to restart your treatment.
Important: Do not double up on your dose to make up for the missed dose!
Can I drink alcohol while taking Mounjaro?
It is advisable to stop or limit alcohol consumption while using Mounjaro.
Alcoholic beverages can be high in calories and counterproductive to weight-loss efforts.
Eating a Balanced Diet with Mounjaro
Making sure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs for optimal functioning while taking Mounjaro can be achieved by eating a balanced diet. It may also reduce the risk of undesirable side effects while supporting the drug’s effects on blood sugar regulation and weight loss.
What should I eat while taking Mounjaro? A balanced diet typically includes eating a variety of foods from all the major food groups. These include:
- Fruits and vegetables.
- Whole grains.
- Lean proteins.
- Healthy fats or dairy.
Fruits and vegetables
Having a high fiber content in these foods helps you feel satisfied and full. In addition, they contain a wealth of vitamins and minerals that are critical to your general health and wellbeing.
Whole grains
Another healthy food to consume when taking Mounjaro is whole grains. Because they are high in fiber and packed with nutrients, they may help you feel fuller for longer. Whole grains can help slow down digestion and stop overeating. Examples of whole grains include brown rice, quinoa, oats, and whole-wheat bread. Complex carbohydrates, which provide you with energy throughout the day, are another excellent feature of whole grains.
Protein-rich foods
It is crucial to consume foods high in protein when taking Mounjaro. Your body requires protein as a necessary nutrient for tissue growth, repair, and maintenance. Consuming foods high in protein, such as fish, poultry, legumes, lean meats, and tofu, can help you keep your lean muscle mass even as you lose weight. In addition to being low in sugar and carbs, these foods support blood sugar regulation and aid in weight loss.
Should I take Mounjaro with a meal?
Mounjaro can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. The choice is entirely yours.
The important thing to remember is that you inject Mounjaro on the same day each week.
Can I change the day or time when I take Mounjaro?
You will inject Mounjaro once a week.
If you want to change the day of the week you take your dose, make sure there are at least 3 days (72 hours) between doses.
How often should I take Mounjaro? Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection.
You will start your weight loss journey on the lowest dose; follow the dosing schedule until you reach a dose that is suited to you. You will not need to move up to the highest dose if your appetite is reduced by a lower dose.
You should always make sure that you pick a date and time that works best for. Make sure that you take your dose of Mounjaro on the same day each week as this allows the medication levels to remain steady in your body and work effectively.
