Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
When deciding between Wegovy and Mounjaro for weight loss, there are various factors to consider that may prompt a change in your weight loss approach.
Weight-loss treatments have varying effects on individuals, and what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. If you are suffering from side effects and are not experiencing any weight loss even at the highest prescribed dose of semaglutide (Wegovy) , switching to Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) might be worth considering.
If you have experienced adverse effects from Wegovy, transitioning to Mounjaro could be an alternative. Although both medications share common side effects, their compositions differ in that Wegovy, manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is solely a GLP-1 receptor agonist; Mounjaro, produced by Eli Lilly, is both a GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist and the first of its kind in obesity and weight management.
It is crucial to remember that both drugs should be used alongside a low-calorie diet and regular exercise for optimal results.
Clinical trials suggest both medications are safe and effective for weight management, but they found that Mounjaro appears to be more effective than Wegovy when it comes to the total amount of weight lost.
Doses
Another factor when considering switching from Wegovy to Mounjaro are the doses. Wegovy has 5 different strengths, while Mounjaro has 6. They are both once-weekly injections, and you should follow the dosing schedule until you find the dose most suited to you.
With Mounjaro, you must start on the lowest dose at 2.5mg and it is important to remember that if a lower dose is effective, there will be no need to increase. If you have already been taking Wegovy and wants to swap to Mounjaro, depending on the dose of Wegovy you may be able to start Monujaro on a higher dose but this will be discussed following your approved consultation form.
Switching treatments
Do not stop or start any medication without speaking to us first, due to the different doses and scheduling, you will need to have stopped taking Wegovy before you start taking Mounjaro but advice will be given to you following your consultation.
Starting Mounjaro
Once you have decided to make the switch, you may need to start Mounjaro on the lowest dose before following the dosing schedule and increasing. It may feel like a set back starting from the beginning but it is important for us to manage your weight loss journey safely. If you increase the dose too quickly, it could lead to adverse side effects, so it is important that you follow the schedule until we find the dose suited to you.
What is the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?
Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are safe and effective weight loss medications that help to reduce appetite, curb cravings and, when used alongside diet and lifestyle factors, help you to lose weight.
If you are familiar with Ozempic and Wegovy you will know that their active ingredient is Semaglutide which is a GLP-1 receptor agonist while Mounjaro’s active ingredient is Tirzepatide.
Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) is the first of its kind as it targets not 1 but 2 receptor agonists GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) and GIP (gastric inhibitory polypeptide) It works by mimicking receptor agonists, slowing down digestion, and makes you feel fuller for longer which can lead to weight loss.
How long does it take to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
Currently, we do not have specific details regarding the waiting period required between stopping Wegovy and starting Mounjaro.
Wegovy has an extended half-life, which means it may take several weeks for it to completely leave your system, depending on the dosage.
Once we have determined the appropriate timeframe for transitioning from Wegovy to Mounjaro, we will provide you with that information.
Will I get withdrawal symptoms when switching between Wegovy and Mounjaro?
You might experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking Wegovy, which may result in weight regain, changes to your mood and some Gastrointestinal symptoms
You may want to think about gradually reducing your dose of Wegovy to prevent the effects from occurring before completely stopping medication.
It is important to remember to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle with a reduced-calorie diet along with increased physical activity.
How does Mounjaro work?
Similar to Ozempic and Wegovy, Mounjaro works by mimicking the naturally occurring hormone called glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) which is released in the gut in response to food intake and acts as a physiological regulator of appetite.
GLP-1 targets areas of the brain involved in the regulation of appetite and food intake. This can help you eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
Unlike other weight loss medications, Mounjaro is also a Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide receptor agonist (GIP) which works on another hormone in the body used to help regulate your appetite.
Like all medications, Mounjaro can give some people side effects when they first start to take it. However, not everyone will experience side effects, and those who do often find that they go away on their own within a few weeks or months as their body gets used to the medication.

Starting Mounjaro
There are six different doses available, ranging from the starting dose of 2.5mg to the maximum dose of 15mg.
You must always start at the lowest dose of 2.5mg which you will inject once a week for a month (4 weeks) this will allow your body to adjust to the medication and help reduce the risk of potential side effects.
After this dose, if necessary, you might move on to the next dose which is 5mg, and gradually increase your dose by 2.5mg every 4 weeks. The maximum dose is 15mg. It is important to remember NOT to titrate to the next dose if the current dose you are taking is managing your hunger and cravings. Gradually increasing your dose (titration) helps your body adjust to the medication and reduces the risk of potential side effects.

Can I start on the Highest dose of Mounjaro?
The simple answer is no; you cannot start of the highest dose of Mounjaro.
You must start at the lowest starting dose of 2.5mg and gradually increase (titrate) through doses until you find the right dose that works for you.
You need to allow your body to adjust to the medication, and by starting at the lowest dose, you allow your body to experience the effects of reduced hunger, feeling fuller for longer, and any potential side effects should you have them.
If, after the first 4 weeks on the dose of 2.5mg, you feel that you are still hungry and are craving foods, then your dose will be discussed and you will may titrate to the next. You will go through the same process to ensure that your body is steadily adjusting to the new dose without causing any potential side effects.
Some people may think that starting at the highest dose will increase their chances of losing weight, but this is not the case. You are more likely to experience serious unwanted side effects as you have not allowed your body to get used to the medication.
